Jellinek Retreat is a subsidiary of Jellinek, part of the Arkin Holding. Arkin is a leading institution for the treatment of addiction and mental care in Amsterdam, and is dedicated to their patients and society. Arkin employs over 3000 people and treats over 30,000 patients each year. The Jellinek has focused on the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and care for people with addiction issues and related risky lifestyles for over 100 years. The Jellinek was established in 1909 as a Medical Consultation Office for Alcoholism. The first alcohol clinic was established in the 1950s and given the name of Jellinek. The institution was named after Dr. Jellinek, who was a US doctor originally from Hungary, who had performed a lot of research on alcoholism and was the first to suppose that alcoholism was a curable disease. Throughout the decades, Jellinek became
a large and internationally well respected addiction institution. The institution offers outpatient and clinical treatment programs that are customized to specific client groups.
The Jellinek has a leading reputation because of its progressive approach in the field of quality and innovation. In the early 1990s, the Jellinek introduced a quality policy in accordance with the model of the European Foundation for Quality management (EFQM ) in Dutch Health care. This policy was awarded the national quality award in 1996. In addition the Jellinek was the first institution in the health care industry to receive the ISO 9001 certificate in 1999. The Jellinek works intensively together with the Amsterdam Institute of Addiction Research (AIAR ), which was founded in 1993 by the Jellinek, the Academic Medical Center (AMC ), and the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Together with the AIAR , the Jellinek introduced Evidence Based Medicine in the treatment of addiction in 1999. The Jellinek systematically monitors the treatment’s results and optimizes the quality of the (treatment) processes. Thanks to its collaboration with prominent institutions for addiction care in other countries, Jellinek keeps track of the latest international developments, and the organisation shares its knowledge with others.
